UNHCR Canada

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), also known as the UN Refugee Agency, is the world’s leading organization aiding and protecting people forced to flee their homes due to violence, conflict and persecution. UNHCR provides shelter, food, water, medical care and other life-saving assistance to refugees around the world.

Mashup has worked with UNHCR on a variety of projects.

Our interactive digital experience in support of the agency’s “Children On The Run” advocacy campaign allows users to walk in the footsteps of children fleeing gang violence in the North of Central America. The interactive storyline relies on a combination of animation, design, writing, editing, and web development, as well as the creation of a multifaceted social media marketing campaign to promote the experience.

The digital experience became part of the Toronto District Schoolboard curriculum about a year after it was created. A Spanish language version was also developed by Mashup for use in South America.

Mashup also redesigned the UNHCR Canada magazine (in both English and French) and developed videos (including “The World’s Oldest Rebel,” which went viral, among them), print ads, and other assets.

“We’ve come to think of Mashup Creative Strategy (formerly Ripple Creatives) as an extension of the UNHCR team. They’ve taken the time to immerse themselves in our brand, developing a deep understanding of our voice and of our needs. They provide us with award-winning creative—whether traditional, digital, or multimedia- and ensure that strategy and ROI are baked into everything they do. As a result, when we work with Mashup, we know they’re here for us and feel 100% confident the project will be done right.”

Alex Tom, Head of the Canadian Fundraising Unit: Private Sector Partnerships Officer, UNHCR Canada.
